Development of a Dynamic Irrigation Water-Use Model within a Hydrologic Decision-Support System in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, 1999-2017
Water use is a critical and often uncertain component of quantifying the water cycle and securing reliable and sustainable water supplies. The USGS developed Irrigation Water-Use Model 1.0 to improve groundwater-use estimates for a groundwater model. The model uses remote sensing data and well flowmeter data to determine irrigation water use at a fine spatial (100 meter) and temporal (monthly) resolution and outputs monthly gridded (1 kilometer) estimates. Results indicate annual total irrigation water-use estimates in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain ranged from about 3 to 9 billion gallons per day. Future work will incorporate machine learning and geostistical methods.
